The case
In a sea of dating apps, we were pleasantly surprised when we had to come up with a name for one very distinct and original idea. Camera Flirt App takes a different approach to flirting – instead of sending cheesy texts, you simply ask the person you like to take a photo of you (or you and your friends). The idea is to make it easier to strike up a conversation with someone you don’t know when you’re both at the same physical location. The developers wanted to remove the awkward barrier of small talk in a truly unique way, and they needed the app name to describe that.
The solution
To decide the most appropriate name for this app, we had to get real familiar with it. We needed a deeper understanding of the user journey. As we found out, the concept behind the app is easy to grasp. To complete a flirt, all you need to do is go to the person you like and ask them to take a picture of you, from within the app. That’s the first step of the flirt. Provided that they agree, when they take the picture the app will automatically ask them a predefined question – for example, you can set it to “Can I have your number?”, “Can I get you a drink?”, or even something playful like “Cats or dogs?”. From then on, your success is up to you.
For this particular case, we decided that a descriptive name is a better choice than a metaphorical one. The reason was that the market for these app was already crowded with familiar names – another seemingly pointless name would just go unnoticed. We had to let the users know exactly what to expect from the get-go. Therefore, the most logical conclusion was to use the words “camera” and “flirt”, since they were the basis of the brand. This is how CameraFlirtApp was born.
