As in every other field of business – in naming business there are some great opportunities in though economic times. For example – the perfect domain name for your project that was previously taken now can be free. Why so ? Because people that trade with domain names don’t have enough money to continue the yearly payments. And they start releasing some of their not so favourite domain names. Of course some word of 5 letters in your language could be meaningful to some english speaking foreigner or probably a newly invented word that’s just right for your new business idea isn’t among the top 200 domains of the portfolio of this person and he / she wants to get rid of it.
I’m writing the above observation because of 2 reasons :
- I’m also trading with domain names and have a small portfolio with reserved cool domain names, but recently I’ve decided not to spend any more money on some of them.
- I’ve just bought a cool 6 letters domain name for a project of mine that was reserved / taken 3 years ago.
More about my story last month: Before 3 years I’ve created a small forum called Design Barter Forum. I wanted a short domain – maximum of 6 letters. I’ve come with the idea of “Des Bar” – as a short version of the 2 words. The thing was that “desbar.com” was taken at that time. I though “what the heck – I’ll give a try to one of these new trendy “.eu” domain names..”. I’ve registered the domain name “desbar.eu” and start working on the forum. Nothing big happened with the idea – there were a few users and some barter designs, but nothing really big. Time past and after 2 years I’ve abandoned the project.
Before 2 months a friend of mine called ( a very good designer ) and asked – ‘what happened with that design barter project of yours ?”. I’ve explained the situation and then something make me go and check if the domain that I originally wanted is free. It was free – desbar.com. What a seduction…
Should I registered the domain name that I want from the beginning ? Should I give a second chance to the idea I believe in ?
